This unit moves beyond the fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to explore in greater depth and breadth, many of the concepts introduced in ENVT4411 Geographic Information Systems Applications (or similar). The unit introduces students to spatial data and analytic techniques of particular relevance to the environmental sciences. ENVT5564 explores contemporary approaches for the presentation, manipulation and analysis of spatial information informed by industry practice and issues related to the monitoring and restoration of contaminated sites. Key topics include spatial abstraction, multivariate analysis, spatial data exploration and statistics. Throughout the unit students undertake critical assessments of spatial analytic strategies used by government agencies, the private sector and academia to support the management, monitoring and/or restoration of contaminated sites.
Outcomes
Students are able to (1) demonstrate an understanding of geography's statistical and graphical foundations; (2) explain the importance of appropriate communication of geographic phenomena and spatial analysis outputs; (3) apply geographic data exploration techniques; and (4) apply spatial analytic techniques to support the management, monitoring and/or restoration of contaminated sites..
Assessment
Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) laboratory portfolio and (2) final project report. Further information is available in the unit outline.
