Minor Overview

About this minor
This minor in Italian offers integrated study of Italian language and culture. As a language, Italian opens up the riches of Italy's cultural past and the fascination of its dynamic present. It is one of the most widely spoken languages in Australia after English because of the ongoing migrant, intellectual, cultural and commercial links between Australia and Italy. The minor in Italian is available at two levels: 1. for students with no or little prior knowledge of the language. Over four semesters, students develop functional levels of competency in speaking, writing, listening to and reading Italian, corresponding to Level A2/B1 of the internationally recognised Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. 2. for students with ATAR Italian or equivalent. Over four semesters, students develop increased levels of competency in speaking, writing, listening to and reading Italian, corresponding to Level B1/B2 of the internationally recognised Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Generic skills acquired in language study, in intercultural understanding, multi-tasking and communication, are highly valued by employers. For students taking a minor which shares units with their other unit sets (majors or minors): in order for minors to be recognised on academic and graduation documents, students may only have a maximum of one unit overlapping between their unit sets.
Outcomes
Students are able to (1) show competence in the Italian language in the four macroskills of language acquisition—reading, writing, listening and speaking—rated according to the Common European Framework for Languages; (2) interact confidently and successfully in many situations involving Italian cultural conventions; (3) interpret Italian language texts—written, audio, visual—in the light of Italian culture and society; and (4) move effectively between the English and Italian languages and cultures.
