Description

Diabetes is a National Health Priority Area. The condition is characterised by hyperglycaemia caused by an inability to either make and/or use insulin effectively. Hyperglycaemia affects nearly every part of the body including diabetes-related retinopathy, neuropathies, poor wound healing and incontinence to causing chronic kidney disease, amputations and

cardiovascular disease.

Diabetes educators are registered health professionals who have undertaken further training. Diabetes educators are government-funded to provide services to support people living with diabetes to help them manage their sugar levels and health to prevent disease progression and serious outcomes.

Professional Recognition

This unit is part of a sequence that meets the requirements of the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) for the formal learning in Step 1 towards becoming a Credentialled Diabetes Educator. To meet the requirements, learners must successfully complete a minimum of a Graduate Certificate that includes the following units:

Outcomes

Students are able to (1) demonstrate an understanding of the cultural, economic and social background and life stage that impact on a person's ability to self-manage their diabetes.; (2) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the National Diabetes Support Service (NDSS); and (3) identify key diabetes management clinical documents and guidelines.

Assessment

Indicative assessments in this unit are as follows: (1) quizzes and (2) exam. Further information is available in the unit outline.

This unit is delivered in an online, asynchronous format, with approximately 5 hours allocated for assessment and 145 hours for independent study covering 4 modules.
Note
It is recognised that allied health professionals may already have the knowledge covered in PHCY5165 Diabetes Fundamentals 1 and PHCY5165 Diabetes Fundamentals 2. For these allied health professionals, there is the alternative option to enrol in the credit bearing microcredential PHCYM501 Diabetes Fundamentals. This microcredential will offer allied health professionals the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge through undertaking assessments to demonstrate they have knowledge consistent with the expectations of the content in this unit.

Students are recommended to purchase Essential Textbooks, but a limited number of copies of all Essential Textbooks are held in the Library in print, and as an ebook where possible. Recommended readings for the unit can be accessed in Unit Readings directly through the Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Contact hours provide an indication of the type and extent of in-class activities this unit may contain. The total amount of student work (including contact hours, assessment time, and self-study) will approximate 150 hours per 6 credit points.
