- 11.1.1 General provisions for combined courses for two bachelor's degrees
Applicability of the Student Rules, policies and procedures
11.1.1.1(1) The Student Rules apply to students in combined courses.
(2) The policy, policy statements and guidance documents and student procedures apply except as otherwise indicated in the rules for combined courses.
Applicability of the Faculties’ general rules and general provisions
11.1.1.2 The relevant Faculty general provisions for the corresponding single degree apply to the degree components except as set out in the rules for a specific combined course.
Combined courses for two bachelor’s degrees
11.1.1.3(1) A faculty or faculties may offer combined courses for the award of two bachelor's degrees.
(2) A combined course referred to in (1) comprises significant components of each of two bachelor's degree courses.
(3) Completion of the remaining requirements of the degrees is achieved by the faculty or faculties cross-crediting units. (For details of limits on credit permitted see University Policy)
Admission
(4) To be eligible to apply for enrolment in a combined course for two bachelor's degrees an applicant must at least be qualified for entry to each of the relevant single degree courses.
Progress Committee
11.1.1.4(1) For each combined course that is offered by two or more faculties there is a Progress Committee.
Membership
(2) The Progress Committee comprises—
(a) the deans of all faculties involved;
(b) the associate deans or sub-deans, or equivalent, of all faculties involved; and
(c) the faculty administrative officers, or equivalent, of all faculties involved.
Function
(3) The role of the Progress Committee is to—
(a) act under delegated authority from all faculties involved as the Board of Examiners for the combined course;
(b) grant credit towards the combined course;
(c) in exceptional circumstances, permit variations to enrolment in respect of specific course requirements;
(d) assign progress status;
(e) make decisions on appeals against progress status; and
(f) make decisions on applications for re-admission to the combined course following exclusion.
11.1.1.5 In the case of a combined course offered by one faculty only, the faculty determines who will carry out the functions of the Progress Committee.
Satisfactory progress
11.1.1.6 To make satisfactory progress in a combined course a student must, in a calendar year—
(a) pass units to a value of at least half the total value of units in which they remain enrolled after the final date for withdrawal without academic penalty [see University Policy]; and
(b) satisfy any additional requirements that apply to progress in the relevant single degree courses and are stated in the relevant faculty's rules.
Progress status
11.1.1.7 Unless the Progress Committee determines otherwise in light of exceptional circumstances—
(a) when a student fails to make satisfactory progress for the first time, a status of 'On Probation' or ‘Suspended’ is assigned;
(b) when a student fails to make satisfactory progress for the second time, a status of 'Excluded' is assigned.
Completion of single degree following exclusion
11.1.1.8 A student who has been excluded from a combined course but wishes to complete one of the component degrees as a single degree may apply to do so by writing a letter to the associate dean or sub-dean or equivalent of the relevant faculty, with a copy to the dean of the faculty which administers the other component degree.
Transfer to single degree course
11.1.1.9 A student who wishes to transfer from the combined course and to complete one of the component degrees as a single degree must apply to the relevant faculty.
11.1.1.10 (1) If a student is permitted to transfer from a combined course into a single degree course they must comply with the rules for the single degree course into which they have transferred.
(2) A student who has transferred from a combined course into a single degree course and who wishes to transfer back into the combined course must apply to do so.
Completion of degree requirements
11.1.1.11 On completion of a combined course, students will have completed the course requirements for both degrees towards which it leads.
11.1.1.12 Students may be qualified for the award of one of the degrees before completing the combined course if they have completed units to a total value of at least that required for the single degree course as specified in the relevant faculty's rules, including—
(a) all of the units specified for the relevant degree component in the rules for the combined course; and
(b) other units completed in or credited towards the combined course which the relevant faculty determines will satisfy the remaining requirements of the single degree course when they are credited towards that course in accordance with the University’s and the relevant faculty's policy on credit.
11.1.1.13 Students who consider that they may be qualified for the award of a degree under Student Rule 42 and who wish to take out that degree must write to the dean of the faculty concerned, with a copy to the dean of the faculty which administers the other component degree, seeking written approval to take out the degree concerned.
11.1.1.14 Students who graduate with a degree under Student Rule 42 are not permitted to re-enrol in the combined course.
Entry to honours
11.1.1.15 (1) The faculty concerned may permit a student who has completed the requirements for the award of a degree to enrol in the course for that degree with honours.
(2) A student who is permitted to enrol for a degree with honours before completing the requirements for the combined course will be permitted subsequently to re-enrol in and complete the combined course subject to the time limit outlined in University Policy.
Concurrent enrolment in two award courses
11.1.1.16 A student in a combined course who has completed the requirements for the award of a degree and is permitted to enrol for that degree with honours in accordance with University Policy may be permitted by the relevant faculties, or faculty in the case of a combined course administered by only one faculty, to enrol concurrently in the course for the degree with honours and in units which form part of the remaining requirements for the combined course.

Applicability of the general provisions
11.1.3.1 The general provisions in 11.1.1 apply to the course.
Course structure
11.1.3.2 The combined course for the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Economics consists of units to a total value of 216 or 222 points comprising a Bachelor of Arts component to the value of 108 points and a Bachelor of Economics component to the value of 108 or 114 points.
Bachelor of Arts component
11.1.3.3(1) The Bachelor of Arts component consists of units to a total value of 108 points comprising—
(a) Level 1 units to the value of 36 to 54 points from Table 3.2.2a (Bachelor of Arts options) in the Faculty of Arts Rules;
and
(b) Level 2 or 3 units to the value of 54 to 72 points from Table 3.2.2a (Bachelor of Arts options) in the Faculty of Arts Rules.
(2) The units chosen under (1)—
(a) must include the requirements for at least one of the majors listed in Faculty of Arts Rule 3.2.2.5(1);
and
(b) must not include Level 1 units in any one subject area to a total value greater than 12 points;
and
(c) must not include Level 2 and 3 units in any one subject area to a total value greater than 66 points, unless the Faculty approves otherwise in exceptional circumstances;
and
(d) must not include economics, economic history or employment relations units.
Bachelor of Economics component
11.1.3.4(1) The Bachelor of Economics component consists of units to a total value of 108 or 114 points comprising—
(a) both units in Table 4.2.2a (Bachelor of Economics Level 1 core units) in the UWA Business School Rules—12 points
and
(b) STAT1520 Economic and Business Statistics—6 points
and
(c) Level 1 units to the value of 12 to 18 points chosen—
either
(i) from the Table 4.2.2b (Bachelor of Economics Level 1 options) in the UWA Business School Rules;
or
(ii) from other Level 1 units offered within the University;
and
(d) units to make up the remaining number of points required for the component (72 to 84 points) chosen—
either
(i) from Table 4.2.2u (Level 2 and 3 units offered by the Faculty) in the UWA Business School Rules;
or
(ii) from other Level 2 and 3 units offered within the University.
(2) The units chosen under (1) must include the requirements for at least one of the majors set out in UWA Business School Rules 4.2.2.10 to 4.2.2.16.
(3) Students who have not obtained a minimum scaled score of 50 per cent in WACE Mathematics 3A/3B, WACE Mathematics 3C/3D, TEE Applicable Mathematics, TEE Calculus, or equivalent, must include ECON1111 Quantitative Methods for Business and Economics (6 points) in the Level 1 units required under (1)(c).
(4) Students who do not complete ECON1105 Rise of the Global Economy or ECON1141 Australian Economic History as one of their Level 1 options and who do not take a major in Employment Relations must complete as part of their course a Level 2 or Level 3 economic history unit listed for the Economic History major in the 2010 Rules for the course.

11.1.5.2 The course consists of units to a total value of 264 points comprising a Bachelor of Arts component to the value of 96 points and a Bachelor of Engineering component to the value of 168 points.
Bachelor of Arts component
11.1.5.3(1) The Bachelor of Arts component consists of units to a total value of 96 points comprising—
(a) Level 1 units to the value of 36 to 54 points from Table 3.2.2a (Bachelor of Arts options) in the Faculty of Arts Rules;
and
(b) Level 2 or 3 units to the value of 42 to 60 points from Table 3.2.2a (Bachelor of Arts options) in the Faculty of Arts Rules.
(2) The units chosen under (1)—
(a) must include the requirements for at least one of the majors listed in Faculty of Arts Rule 3.2.2.5(1);
and
(b) must not include Level 1 units in any one subject area to a total value greater than 12 points.
Bachelor of Engineering component
11.1.5.4 The Bachelor of Engineering component consists of units to a total value of 168 points comprising—
(a) all foundation core units required under Rule 6.2.2A.6(1)(a) in the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Rules—36 points
and
(b) the core units for the chosen Bachelor of Engineering program as prescribed in the respective rules for the relevant program in 6.2 of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Rules, 90 to 144 points, except that—
(i) Electrical and Electronic Engineering students must take all units in Groups A and D, one unit from Group B, and are exempt from taking the unit in Group C in Table 6.2.2Ea (Electrical and Electronic Engineering core units)—132 points
(ii) Petroleum Engineering students must not take MECH4400 Engineering for Sustainable Development;
and
(c) other units from the relevant table(s) in the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Rules as follows:
(i) for the Chemical and Process Engineering program:

Award of Bachelor of Engineering with honours
11.1.5.5 The Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics may award the degree of Bachelor of Engineering with honours1 to a student who has completed the requirements of the Bachelor of Engineering course at a sufficiently high level.

11.1.20.3(1) The Bachelor of Commerce component consists of units to a total value of 84 or 90 points comprising—

(b) one unit or two units chosen from Group B in Table 4.2.4b (Bachelor of Commerce Level 1 options) in the UWA Business School Rules or from the Level 1 units offered within the University—6 or 12 points

11.1.22.4 The Bachelor of Laws component consists of units to a total value of 192 points comprising—
(a) all units in Table 7.2.2a (Bachelor of Laws core units)1 in the Faculty of Law Rules—126 points
and
(b) units to the value of 66 points from Table 7.2.2b (Bachelor of Laws options) in the Faculty of Law Rules including units to the value of at least 6 points from Group B in that table.

11.1.25.1 The general provisions in 11.1.1 apply to the course.
Course structure
11.1.25.2(1) The combined course for the degrees of Bachelor of Computer and Mathematical Sciences and Bachelor of Engineering consists of units to a total value of 240 to 252 points depending on the combination of majors taken for the Bachelor of Computer and Mathematical Sciences and allowing for units which are cross-credited between the courses and units referred to in (2).
(2) The Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics will accept certain units or groups of units completed in the Bachelor of Computer and Mathematical Sciences component as alternatives to or equivalents of units required for the Bachelor of Engineering component.1

Bachelor of Computer and Mathematical Sciences component
11.1.25.3 The Bachelor of Computer and Mathematical Sciences component consists of units to a total value of 102 to 108 points comprising—
(a) the requirements for two majors from those listed in (i) and (ii) under Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Rule 6.2.3.3(1)(b), details of which are set out in 6.2.3 of that Faculty’s Rules;
and
(b) the units as set out in Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Rule 6.2.3.3(4) except that—
(i) under Rule 6.2.3.3(4)(c) students must take only MATH1001 Mathematical Methods 1 and MATH1002 Mathematical Methods 2; and
(ii) under Rule 6.2.3.3(4)(e) students must take at least MATH2209 Calculus and Probability 1 and MATH2020 Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra 1.

(a) all foundation core units required under Rule 6.2.2A.6(1)(a) in the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Rules—36 points

(b)(i) all the units in Group A, one unit from Group B and three units from Group D in the core units for the Electrical and Electronic Engineering program as prescribed in Table 6.2.2Ea (Electrical and Electronic Engineering core units) in the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Rules—126 points
and
(ii) options to a total value of six points comprising one unit from Group A in Table 6.2.2Eb (Electrical and Electronic Engineering options);
and

Award of Bachelor of Engineering with honours
11.1.25.5 The Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics may award the degree of Bachelor of Engineering with honours to a student who has completed the requirements of the Bachelor of Engineering course at a sufficiently high level.

Applicability of the general provisions
11.1.26.1 The general provisions in 11.1.1 apply to the course.
Course structure
11.1.26.2(1) The combined course for the degrees of Bachelor of Computer Science and Bachelor of Engineering consists of—
(a) units to a total value of 240 points;
and
(b) 16 weeks’ practical experience (GENG4020 Professional Practicum1) in an engineering-related workplace approved by the Faculty.2
(2) The Faculty may, on written application by a student and on production of satisfactory evidence, accept work completed by the student prior to acceptance into the course as fulfilling the requirements of (1)(b) and (4).
(3) In exceptional circumstances, the Faculty may vary the requirements for practical experience if satisfied that such practical experience cannot be obtained or undertaken.
(4) Students must submit two copies, one for each component of the combined course, of a report on work completed for the practical experience (GENG4020 Professional Practicum1) required under (1)(b) or on work accepted by the Faculty under (2) as fulfilling the requirements of (1)(b), and a Certificate of Practical Work Performed (available on the Faculty’s website).

(b) the requirements for completion of one of the following majors:
(i) Systems (MJ-SYSTM) comprising the four units not already taken from Table 6.2.3d (Systems major core units) in the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Rules—24 points
or
(ii) Web Technologies (MJ-TCHWB) comprising the three units not already taken from Table 6.2.3e (Web Technologies major core units) in the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Rules—18 points

Bachelor of Economics component
11.1.28.3(1) The Bachelor of Economics component consists of units to a total value of 90 or 96 points comprising—
(a) all units in Table 4.2.2a (Bachelor of Economics Level 1 core units) in the UWA Business School Rules—12 points
and
(b) STAT1520 Economic and Business Statistics—6 points
and
(c) Level 1 units to the value of 12 to 18 points chosen—
either
(i) from those listed in Table 4.2.2b (Bachelor of Economics Level 1 options) in the UWA Business School Rules excluding LAWS1104 Introduction to Law;
or
(ii) from other Level 1 units offered within the University;
and
(d) units to make up the remaining number of points required for the component chosen—
either
(i) from Table 4.2.2u (Level 2 and 3 units offered by the Faculty) in the UWA Business School Rules;
or
(ii) from other Level 2 and 3 units offered within the University.
(2) The units chosen under (1) must include the requirements for at least one of the majors set out in UWA Business School Rules 4.2.2.10 to 4.2.2.15.
(3) Students who have not obtained a minimum scaled score of 50 per cent in WACE Mathematics 3A/3B, WACE Mathematics 3C/3D, TEE Applicable Mathematics, TEE Calculus, or equivalent, must include ECON1111 Quantitative Methods for Business and Economics (6 points) in the Level 1 units required under (1)(c).
(4) Students who have not completed ECON1105 Rise of the Global Economy or ECON1141 Australian Economic History as one of their Level 1 options and who do not take a major in Employment Relations must complete as part of their course a Level 2 or Level 3 economic history unit listed for the Economic History major in the 2010 Rules for the course.
Bachelor of Laws component
11.1.28.4 The Bachelor of Laws component consists of units to a total value of 192 points comprising—
(a) all units in Table 7.2.2a (Bachelor of Laws core units)1 in the Faculty of Law Rules—126 points
and
(b) units to the value of 66 points from Table 7.2.2b (Bachelor of Laws options) in the Faculty of Law Rules including units to the value of at least 6 points from Group B in that table.

Admission
11.1.29.2 To be eligible to apply for enrolment in the combined course an applicant must be qualified for entry to the course for the Bachelor of Science (50110).
Course structure
11.1.29.3 The combined course for the degrees of Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Science consists of units to a total value of 210 to 228 points comprising a Bachelor of Education component to a minimum total value of 96 points and a maximum total value of 102 points and a Bachelor of Science component to the value of at least 114 points and no more than 126 points.
Bachelor of Education component
11.1.29.4(1) The Bachelor of Education component consists of units to a minimum total value of 96 points and a maximum total value of 102 points.
(2) Students must select at least one major.1
1 The term 'major' when applied to the Bachelor of Education relates to a curriculum or teaching area. Hence, geography, history, economics and politics comprise a major in Society and Environment; French, German, Japanese, etc. comprise a major in LOTE (Languages Other Than English); and physics, chemistry, biology, etc. comprise a major in Science.
(3) The Faculty may permit students to include a second major if they have the necessary prerequisites.
(4) Students who take one major only must also take a minor.
(5) A major comprises one Curriculum I unit and one corresponding Curriculum II unit.
(6) A minor comprises one Curriculum I unit.
(7) The course with one major (a single major) is as set out in (10)(a).
(8) The course with two majors (a double major) is as set out in (10)(b).
(9) Students will not be permitted to exceed the total number of points prescribed for the component unless the Faculty permits otherwise in exceptional circumstances.
(10) The Bachelor of Education component comprises—
(a) for students studying one major and one minor teaching area:
(i) all units in Group A in Table 11.1.29a (Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Science—Education core units)—48 points

Credit for previously completed work
11.1.29.6(1) If credit is granted towards the combined course for units passed through Continuing Education, it will be for Level 1 and 2 units only and will not exceed 24 points.
(2) If credit is granted towards the Bachelor of Education on the basis of units completed at an approved institution, it will not exceed 24 points.
(3) Credit will not be granted for previously completed professional practice units, or equivalent.
Failure to pass a professional practice 1 unit
11.1.29.7(1) Students who do not pass a professional practice1 unit will have their case considered by a committee comprising—
(a) the Dean of the Faculty of Education;
(b) the Director of Teaching; and
(c) the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Education.
(2) The committee will take into account all relevant information and recommend to the Faculty of Education that the student—
(a) repeat the professional practice unit;
or
(b) repeat the professional practice unit following completion of specified additional relevant work;
or
(c) not be permitted to re-enrol in the course.
(3) If the Faculty of Education permits a student to repeat a professional practice unit, it will determine whether the unit may be repeated in the same or a subsequent year taking into consideration the student's overall performance in the course.

Satisfactory progress
11.1.29.8(1) To make satisfactory progress in a year in which a student is enrolled in a professional practice1 unit, the student must, in addition to passing units to the value of at least half the total points value of units in which they are enrolled, pass the professional practice1 unit(s) in which they are enrolled.
(2) To make satisfactory progress in a year in which a student is not enrolled in a professional practice1 unit, the student must pass units to the value of at least half the total points value of units in which they are enrolled.

Progress status
11.1.29.9(1) Students who pass the professional practice1 unit(s) but do not pass units to a value of at least half the total points value of units in which they are enrolled are assigned the progress status of 'Suspended'.
(2) Students who pass units to a value of at least half the total points value of units for which they are enrolled but who fail a professional practice1 unit are, if the Committee described in 11.1.29.7 so recommends under that Rule, assigned the progress status of 'Excluded'.
(3) Students who do not pass units to a value of at least half the total points value of units for which they are enrolled and who fail a professional practice1 unit, are assigned the progress status of 'Excluded'.
(4) University Policy applies to students who fail to make satisfactory progress in terms of 11.1.29.8(2).
(5) Students who twice fail to make satisfactory progress are assigned the progress status of 'Excluded'.

11.1.30.2 The combined course for the degrees of Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Science consists of a Bachelor of Engineering component as set out in Rule 11.1.30.4 and a Bachelor of Science component as set out in Rule 11.1.30.6 and comprises units to a total value of 240 to 270 points depending on the combination of engineering program and science major that is chosen.
Approved combinations
11.1.30.3(1) A student must complete one of the approved combinations of Science majors and Engineering programs set out in Table 11.1.30a (Approved combinations of Engineering programs and Science majors).
(2) Other combinations may be available with the approval of the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics.
Bachelor of Engineering component
11.1.30.4(1) The Bachelor of Engineering component consists of units to a total value of 168 to 174 points which, following the cross-crediting of units or groups of units completed in the Bachelor of Science component, as detailed in the Faculty Tables of Approved Equivalent or Alternative Units on the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics website, will be reduced to 126 to 150 points depending on the combination of Bachelor of Engineering program and Bachelor of Science major chosen.
(2) The component comprises—
(a) all foundation core units required under Rule 6.2.2A.6(1)(a) in the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Rules—36 points
and
(b) the core units for the chosen Bachelor of Engineering program as prescribed in the respective rules for the relevant program in 6.2 of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Rules, 90 to 144 points, except that—
(i) Electrical and Electronic Engineering students must take all units in Group A, one unit from Group B, three units from Group D, and are exempt from taking the unit in Group C in Table 6.2.2Ea (Electrical and Electronic Engineering core units)—126 points
and
(c) options from the table of options for the chosen program in the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Rules as follows:
(i) for the Chemical and Process Engineering program:
A. the requirement for one of the following majors: the Chemical Engineering major (MJ-ECHEM) as set out in Rule 6.2.2B.2 or the Hydrocarbon Processing major (MJ-EHCPR) as set out in Rule 6.2.2B.3—24 points

Admission
11.1.55.2 The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences may accept into the combined course an applicant who—
(a) has completed at least the Level 1 requirements of the course for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of this University, or equivalent as recognised by the Faculty;
and
(b) has achieved a final weighted average of at least 65 per cent in the units undertaken towards the course for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of this University;
and
(c) has a proposed project which is longitudinal in nature and would suit research over a three-year period.
Submission of research proposal
11.1.55.3 No later than one month before the date of first enrolment in the combined course a student must submit a research proposal through the appropriate head of school and supervisor(s) to the Associate Dean (Research) for consideration.
Course structure
11.1.55.4 The course consists of units to a total value of 3201 points comprising a Bachelor of Medical Science component to the value of 48 points and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery component to the value of 2721 points, at least 48 points of which are comprised of units completed within the single degree course for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.
