      Definitions

      Unless the context suggests otherwise—

      a core unit means a unit which is a compulsory unit in a course;

      an option means a unit chosen from among a range of given options;

      an elective means a unit which a student may choose freely from among the units available in the University, subject to the rules of the unit concerned and to any Faculty rules which govern the number of points that must or may be counted towards the degree from units of a specific level;

      the level of a unit indicates the amount of prior knowledge or maturity of learning required to study it successfully;

      the Faculty includes a body or person to whom the Faculty has delegated responsibility for a function covered by the rule concerned.

          • 3.2.1 Faculty general provisions for bachelor's degrees
            Prerequisites

            3.2.1.1(1) A student must complete Level 1 units to the value of at least 24 points before progressing to Level 2 units.

            (2) A student may, with the approval of the Faculty in exceptional circumstances, enrol in a Level 2 or 3 unit without having completed the normal prerequisite(s).

            Academic Conduct Essentials module

            3.2.1.1A(1) Except as stated in (2), a student who enrols in a course of the University for the first time, irrespective of whether they have previously been enrolled in another course of the University, must undertake a module called Academic Conduct Essentials (the ACE module) in the teaching period in which they are first enrolled.

            (2) A student who has previously achieved a result of Ungraded Pass (UP) for the ACE module is not required to repeat the module.

            (3) A student who has not achieved a result of Ungraded Pass (UP) for the ACE module when their progress is assessed will not have made satisfactory progress even if they have met the other requirements for satisfactory progress in the rules for the course.

            (4) A student who fails to make satisfactory progress in terms of (3) is assigned a progress status of 'On Probation' unless they have been assigned a progress status of 'Suspended' or 'Excluded' for failure to meet the other requirements for satisfactory progress set out in the rules for the course.

            Units from other courses offered in the University or from other Faculties

            3.2.1.2(1) A student may include in their course Level 1 units up to the value of 24 points offered by another faculty in the University.

            (2) The Faculty may permit a student to include in their course Level 2 and 3 units up to the value of 24 points offered in another course in the Faculty or offered by another faculty in the University.

            Course structure for students who have previously completed a degree

            3.2.1.3 A bachelor's degree course for students who have previously completed a relevant degree as recognised by the Faculty comprises units approved by the Faculty which—

            (a) must not have formed part of the course for any degree for which the student has already qualified;

            and

            (b) must have a total points value of at least half that usually required for the course;

            and

            (c) must include units of a level higher than Level 1 to a total value of at least 60 points.

            Time limit on credit

            3.2.1.4 Credit granted towards an undergraduate degree course for a unit or units from either a previously completed course or an incomplete course will date from the year in which the unit or units concerned were passed.

            Special units

            3.2.1.5(1) In exceptional circumstances the Faculty may permit a student to take a special unit.

            (2) A special unit may—

            (a) be made up of elements of approved units in a subject area;

            or

            (b) cover topics within the subject area but not usually taught.1

            1 For example, a unit offered by a visiting academic.

            Satisfactory progress

            3.2.1.6 To make satisfactory progress in a calendar year a student must pass units to a value of at least half the total value of units in which they remain enrolled after the final date for withdrawal without academic penalty.

            Progress status

            3.2.1.7(1) A student who fails to make satisfactory progress after being enrolled at the University for one or two semesters only is assigned a progress status of 'On Probation' by the Faculty.

            (2) Unless the Faculty determines otherwise in exceptional circumstances a student who fails to make satisfactory progress and has been enrolled at the University for more than two semesters is assigned a progress status of 'Suspended' by the Faculty.

            (3) Unless the Faculty determines otherwise in exceptional circumstances a student who has previously been allocated a progress status of 'Suspended' and fails again to make satisfactory progress is assigned a progress status of 'Excluded' by the Faculty.

            Overloads

            3.2.1.8(1) Students are permitted to take up to a 12.5 per cent overload each year without special approval.

            (2) The Faculty may permit a student to take an overload greater than 12.5 per cent in a year in exceptional circumstances.

            (3) The Faculty may permit a student in a combined course to take an overload greater than 25 per cent in a semester in exceptional circumstances.

          • 3.2.2 Bachelor of Arts pass degree (10110) Only available to re-enrolling students.

            Applicability of the Student Rules, policies and procedures

            3.2.2.1(1) The Student Rules apply to students in this course.

            (2) The policy, policy statements and guidance documents and student procedures apply, except as otherwise indicated in the rules for this course.

            3.2.2.2 Rescinded

            Applicability of the Faculty general provisions for bachelor's degrees

            3.2.2.3 The Faculty general provisions for bachelor's degrees in 3.2.1 apply to the course.

            Course structure

            3.2.2.4(1) The course consists of units to a total value of 144 points comprising—

            (a) Level 1 units to a minimum value of 48 points and a maximum value of 72 points from Table 3.2.2a (Bachelor of Arts options);

            and

            (b) Level 2 or 3 units to a minimum value of 72 points and a maximum value of 96 points from Table 3.2.2a (Bachelor of Arts options).

            (2) Students must include in the course at least one of the majors set out in Rules 3.2.2.7 to 3.2.2.44.

            (3) Students are not permitted to include in the course Level 1 units in any one subject area to a total value greater than 12 points.

            (4) Unless the Faculty approves otherwise in exceptional circumstances, students are not permitted to include in the course Level 2 and 3 units in any one subject area to a total value greater than 66 points.

            3.2.10.5(1) The course comprises Level 2 or 3 units to a total value of 96 points from Table 3.2.2a (Bachelor of Arts options).

            (2) Students must include in their course at least one of the majors set out in Rules 3.2.2.7 to 3.2.2.44.

            (3) Except as set out in (4), or unless the Faculty approves otherwise in exceptional circumstances, students are not permitted to include in the course Level 2 and 3 units in any one subject area to a total value greater than 66 points.

            (4) Students enrolled in a double major in Psychology1 are permitted to include Level 2 and 3 Psychology units to a total value of 72 points.

            (5) Students may, with the approval of the Faculty, substitute Level 1 units up to the value of 24 points from Table 3.2.2a (Bachelor of Arts options) for the Level 2 or 3 units required under (1) of an equivalent value, subject to (6).

            Undergraduate diplomas with honours
            Admission

            3.3.1.1(1) The admission requirements for the undergraduate diploma with honours courses are—

            (a) the corresponding diploma of this University passed at a sufficiently high level, or equivalent as recognised by the Faculty;

            and

            (b) completion of the prerequisite of the honours course to which admission is sought.

            (2) To be considered for honours candidature applicants must have completed the requirements of the qualifications on the basis of which admission is sought within the previous seven years and be recommended by the head of school concerned.

            Course structure

            3.3.1.2(1) A student must fulfil the requirements of a course recommended by the head of school concerned and approved by the Faculty.

            (2) The course has a value of 48 points and includes a dissertation.

            (3) The Faculty may approve joint honours courses which may be arranged by one or more schools.

            Submission and examination of dissertation

            3.3.1.3(1) Unless the Faculty permits otherwise, the dissertation must be received by the examiners by a date specified by the school concerned.

            (2) A school must appoint two examiners for each dissertation who, following their examination of the dissertation, each provide a written report to the school.

            (3) A student's supervisor will not normally be an examiner for the dissertation.

            Admission

            3.3.4.3(1) Subject to (2), the Faculty may accept into the diploma course an applicant who is enrolled in an undergraduate degree course of this University.

            (2) Unless the Faculty permits otherwise in exceptional academic circumstances, students enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts (10110), Bachelor of Arts (Asian Studies), Bachelor of Arts (European Studies), Bachelor of Arts (Communication Studies), Bachelor of Letters or a combined course are not permitted to enrol concurrently in the diploma course.

            Course structure

            3.3.4.4(1) In addition to the requirements of the concurrent undergraduate degree, students must complete units to a total value of 48 points comprising—

            (a) Level 1 units to a total value of 12 points in Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian or Japanese language chosen from those listed in Table 3.2.2a (Bachelor of Arts options);

            and

            (b) Level 2 units to a total value of 18 points in the chosen language from those listed in Table 3.2.2a (Bachelor of Arts options);

            and

            (c) Level 3 units to a total value of 18 points in the chosen language from those listed in Table 3.2.2a (Bachelor of Arts options).

            (2) Students may substitute an in-country (24 points) or field (12 points) language study unit for Level 2 or 3 units of equivalent value.
